In 2019, with an amazing team from the Canadian Museum of Nature, and friends and family from Tuktoyaktuk, Myrna Pokiak had the honour to curate an exhibit on the Beluga Whale Harvest from the perspective of her three young Inuvialuk daughters. The exhibit was a recreation of one Myrna worked on in 2003 with the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. Myrna captured all the videos and photographs, with the assistance of her daughters and her mom, Maureen Pokiak. The exhibit launched in Ottawa in 2019, extended to 2022.

Wrote a teacher guide and created an E learning course based on the Inuvialuit document “Taimani: At That Time”

Writer for Tusaayaksat on the New Exhibit at the National Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Ontario. As a curator with a team of exhibit producers, this was one of the highlights of Myrna Pokiak's careers.

In collaboration with Ookpik Tours and Adventures, we wrote and developed a Cultural Awareness Training package.

Experience is the Foundation

Alappaa has over two decades of experience in research, writing, and consulting. At the root, Alappaa was trained in education, sharing knowledge, and researching to gain incite and collaborate ideas, knowledge, and experiences.

Working with Aboriginal Governments, Territorial and Federal Agencies, Museums and Heritage Centres, and Private Industries, Alappaa brings forward perspectives from a 100% Northern and Aboriginal business, with new ideas, original content, and cultural highlights.

Author of an article called: “The North is Like an Igloo”, written to express my views on sovereignty, from the perspective of an Inuvialuk.

Lessons from our Elders

Alappaa has experience in the development of a variety of Educational tools, in person, and online. Myrna Pokiak lead the GNWT Aboriginal Cultural Orientation Package titled, Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training. This package was developed to educate employees and visitors to the GNWT website on the Northwest Territories from the persepectives of Metis, Dene, and Inuvialuit.

Inuvialuit Pitqusiit Inuuniarutait: Inuvialuit Living History Website Lesson Plans. Myrna wrote lesson plans based on the MacFarlane Collection that is currently housed at the Smithsonian Institution of the North American Indian in Washington, DC. The MacFarlane collection is a variety of artefacts that were collected within the Anderson River area, an area Myrna's family has used as a trapping area. It is an area of great cultural importance for many Inuvialuit. The website showcases the Inuvialuit articafts and educates others on a piece of Inuvialuit history.
